1980-1989 (80's Decade)
Historical Events
The Eighties see the collapse of traditional communism and the ending of the Cold War. The fragmentation of communism included the collapse of the Berlin wall and the breakup up of what was the USSR towards the end of the 80's., leading to German reunification. The 80's also signaled a period of the rise of conservatism in political and cultural life, caused by Margaret Thatcher in the UK and Ronald Reagan in the USA. Microsoft, IBM, Intel and Apple begin to have an impact on all our lives as small computers become cheaper and more wide spread including home and Business. And we see the early beginnings of mobile phones as technology gets cheaper and smaller. Famine in Ethiopia causes major music stars to band together to raise money and awareness organising the Live Aid concert. John Lennon is shot
On the evening of 8 December 1980, English musician John Lennon, formerly of the Beatles, was shot and fatally wounded in the archway of The Dakota, his residence in New York City. His killer was Mark David Chapman, an American Beatles fan who was incensed by Lennon's lavish lifestyle and his 1966 comment that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus". Chapman said he was inspired by the fictional character Holden Caulfield from J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye, a "phony-killer" who despises hypocrisy. |
Music at the 80s decade
BEST SONG AT THE 80s
For us, the best song is NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP. It is one of Rick Astley's most famous songs. It was written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, and was released as the first single from Astley's debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody (1987). The song was a worldwide number-one hit, initially in the United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at the top of the chart for five weeks and was the best-selling single of that year. It eventually topped the charts in 25 countries, including the United States and West Germany. The song won Best British Single at the 1988 Brit Awards. |

BEST GROUP AT THE 80s
We think that the best artist at this decade is U2. They are an Irish rock band from Dublin, formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's musical style has evolved throughout their career, yet has maintained an anthemic quality built on Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's chiming, effects-based guitar sounds. Their lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery, focus on personal and sociopolitical themes. Popular for their live performances, the group have staged several ambitious and elaborate tours over their career. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR SEE THEIR YOUTUBE CHANNEL |
